With the advent of new and alternative energy sources, energy generation has largely diversified in recent years, triggering major changes in how electrical networks are managed. Such has been the case with the invention of “smart grids”.

Information and communications technology (ICT) plays an important role in developing and optimizing grids and electrical systems. It is essential to establish a reliable and secure communications network that is not only readily available, but powerful enough to transmit very large volumes of data.

In order to respond to the challenges presented by these innovations, IKOS has developed extensive expertise in the field of SCADA and other in technologies such as IP, Zigbee, and optical networks.  For this reason, IKOS is able to guide and assist the major actors of this sector.

    TURNKEY PROJECTS FOR NATIONAL CONTROL CENTERS (NATIONAL DISPATCHING)

    THE PROJECT MANAGEMENT OF A PORTFOLIO OF ENERGY-MANAGEMENT SYSTEM PROJECTS

     

    PROJECT BACKGROUND

    Alstom provides telecom and SCADA / EMS products and also provides solutions for TSOs (Electric Transmission System Operators) in Europe, Eurasia, and Africa. The service it provides to clients in these countries ranges from the simple provision of telecommunications equipment to the construction of major turnkey NCC projects (national control centers and national dispatch centers) to the upgrading of existing equipment and solutions.

     

    PROJECT DESCRIPTION

    IKOS assisted Alstom in project management activities on various projects throughout Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya. This consisted in coordinating the supply, installation and commissioning of telecommunications equipment (SDH / PDH, boosters, PABX) and remote protection for electrical substations. IKOS’ tasks involved planning, financial management, vendor relationship management, document management, and reporting.

    DEVELOPMENT OF A MOBILE APPLICATION FOR SUPERVISING ELECTRIC GRIDS

     

    PROJECT BACKGROUND

    In order to keep up with new information and communication technologies, including widespread tablet use, Alstom has taken the initiative of innovating and adapting its software to mobile devices and in particular, to the iPad. This cutting-edge tool will allow operators to monitor the status of the electrical grid wherever they are, without having to be at the workstation.

     

    PROJECT DESCRIPTION

    IKOS has contributed to this innovative project by assisting Alstom’s R&D lab in the implementation of the application. The aim was to design an architecture that interfaces with various SCADA applications while guaranteeing functional specifications. The project was largely successful and the first version of the product was marketed and deployed to Alstom’s customers without delay.

    GREENLYS SMARTGRID PROJECT

    THE GREENLYS PROJECT IS AN ENERGY MODEL DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM OF THE FUTURE BASED IN THE FRENCH CITIES OF LYON AND GRENOBLE

     

    PROJECT BACKGROUND

    Launched in 2012, GreenLys is a research project involving various partners (ERDF, GDF Suez, Schneider Electric, and the G2E Lab). It is the first smart grid demonstration project that tests the operation of a global intelligent network management system. GDF SUEZ is performing a cost-benefit analysis to study the impact of smart grid scenarios for the various stakeholders in the French electrical system.

     

    PROJECT DESCRIPTION

    With the aid of ACB tools, IKOS is examining the challenges and the benefits of a smart grid system from the standpoint of transportation and distribution networks, the relationship between production and consumption, and lastly, social and environmental issues.
